Johnson Pass Adventure

Snug Harbor/Cooper Lake Adventure

Snug Harbor/Cooper Lake Adventure

Mountain biking Johnson Pass is one of the classic mountain bike rides on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula and certainly one of the most scenic! After getting fit with the best bike and helmet, you'll be taken by van to the trailhead by Moose Pass which is about a 30 minute drive. Traversing the pass offers a unique and beautiful route through the mountains reaching 1,450 ft elevation and a magical view of Johnson Lake. On the full day through trip, reach Bench Lake first and on the half day trip, ride past beautiful Trail Lake to begin your journey! It’s a segment of the Iditarod National Historic Trail as well! Recommended for intermediate to advance riders comfortable with hilly and some technical terrain. You’ll follow single track trail through forest and open meadows crossing bridges and streams. Some sections can be rocky, rooty and perhaps flooded and muddy if it’s been raining. Definitely a memorable adventure! Lunch & water provided. 9 hours.

Prices start at $275pp. (2 person minimum; group rates!)

Trail of Blue Ice

Snug Harbor/Cooper Lake Adventure

Hope junction to johnson pass

We first meet at the 'bike barn' in Cooper Landing to get outfitted with the right bike and helmet for each rider. Our 15 passenger van transports the group up to Portage Valley to the trailhead at Moose Meadows. The trail is a mix of smooth gravel and boardwalks around some ponds. For the next 4 miles, continue through woods, past ponds, and over small streams on the east side of the valley. As you continue upstream to Portage Lake, you follow the retreat of the glacier that once filled this valley. Evidence of the glacier retreat is evident in the topography of the valley and hanging valleys and glaciers. At the end of the trail is the Begich-Boggs Center and Portage Lake just beyond the end of the trail. Look across to Maynard Mountain and Shakespeare Shoulder, with Portage Pass in between the two. As you do, try to imagine the scene not many decades ago when Portage Glacier towered in the shallows just offshore—or the scene not many centuries ago when it filled the entire valley

Stop for photos and lunch along the way that is packed on the trail for you. The van is ready and waits for the group to return to Cooper Landing after a cool day discovering the Trail of Blue Ice! 7 hours.

Prices start at $265pp. (2 person minimum; group rates!)

At approx mile 2.4 from Hope the trail crosses the East Fork of Sixmile Creek (bridge) with a total elevation gain of approx 220' from Hope to Johnson Pass.
